Signs and Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2013 | Articles

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can happen to anyone and can range from a mild concussion to severe brain damage.  The most common causes of TBI are falls, motor vehicle or other traffic-related accidents, assaults, being struck by an object, and participation in contact sports or risky recreational activities.  Even mild TBI can have long-lasting symptoms that may significantly affect your life and ability to work or perform everyday tasks.  However, the sooner TBI is diagnosed, the better chance you have of mitigating the severity of the symptoms.  For this reason, you should be aware of the signs of TBI and seek immediate medical attention if you suspect you have suffered injury.

Common Signs of TBI

Anytime you suffer a blow to your head or experience a violent jolt of the head, you should consult a doctor.  However, you should most definitely seek medical treatment if any of the following signs occur:

  • Loss of consciousness (no matter how brief)
  • Headaches or pressure
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Problems with your vision
  • Problems with your memory
  • Feeling stunned, dazed, or confused
  • Unusual clumsiness
  • Feeling overly tired
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Feelings of depression

Common Symptoms of TBI

TBI symptoms can widely vary depending on which part of your brain was injured.  Symptoms can affect your mind and body, and some symptoms may not set in for a period of time.  Some of the most common symptoms can cause:

  • Cognitive problems with memory, problem solving, reasoning, learning, decision making, focus, ability to complete tasks or follow instructions, attention or concentration.
  • Physical problems with balance, coordination, dizziness, headaches.
  • Communication problems with ability to follow and participate in normal conversations, expressing your thoughts in words (orally or written), expressing appropriate emotion or reactions to situations.

These are only some of the complications that can be caused by TBI.  However, these symptoms are particularly difficult to deal with because they are usually invisible to other people.  Therefore, other people may have a difficult time understanding why you are struggling with even the simplest of behaviors.
